We partner with parents to help them grow disciples of Christian faith. We want children to feel welcome, safe, loved, and accepted here. We strive to help them grow in their relationships with one another and in Jesus Christ.

Baptism welcomes your child to the church family and is the beginning of a lifelong relationship. Sunday School is our largest ongoing ministry. Preschoolers enjoy activities and stories that help even very young children learn that God loves them, they can depend on God, Jesus is their friend, and church is a place where they grow and develop in their Christian faith. The curriculum offers the children opportunities to be engaged in learning Bible stories, exploring questions and participating in worship rituals. Sunday School is 9:45–10:45 a.m.

Sunday Child Care

Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade follow Godly Play, which allows children to discover the meanings and mysteries of faith for themselves. Through lessons, children explore the mystery of God’s presence in our lives, hear God’s invitation for spiritual experience, listen to what God is saying, and make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in our lives (from the Godly Play Foundation). Hands-on storytelling materials bring Bible stories to life. Children respond to the story with art and a time of wondering.

Third, fourth, and fifth grade Sunday School provides opportunities for children to bond as peer relationships become a priority. Third graders dive into Third Grade Bible Academy, which helps them become familiar with the new Bibles they receive in the fall. Through games, activities, and worship, they explore this sacred text. Fourth and fifth grade curriculum incorporates team-building and games to make our faith stories come alive, with special focus on the developmental needs of our tweens.

Elementary Worship

(K-5th Grade)

Children gather monthly in Francis Chapel during the Sunday School hour to worship through song, scripture, story, and prayer. They use special bulletins and follow the order of worship used in our sanctuary. Elementary Worship further prepares children to worship with their families.

How do I check in my child?

Children not yet in Kindergarten check-in at the preschool lobby kiosks for both worship care and Sunday school. Parents receive a nametag and a security badge. We ask parents to keep the security badge with them to pick up their child after worship. Elementary students will check-in at their individual Sunday school classrooms. We ask that parents drop off-and pick-up elementary students at their classrooms. The best way to keep our records updated and to ensure easy check-in is to register for Sunday school each year. When is Sunday School for children?

Sunday School is offered September – May during the 9:45 worship service for children ages two through fifth grade. REGISTER HER

Can my child meet me in the sanctuary, Jubilee Hall, lobby, or at my adult classroom?

The only children allowed to leave the classroom at the end of class without a parent to pick them up are the fourth and fifth graders. Those parents must have signed a self-release form at the beginning of the Sunday school year and designated a spot where their child must meet them after class.

Do children attend worship?

Yes! Children of all ages are welcome to attend any of our worship services with their families. Worship care is available for those children not yet in Kindergarten at all four services. Our Pre-K Sunday school classes participate in a five-week Worship Readiness curriculum in the spring. In this series of lessons, children learn what it means to worship as a community with one’s church family, who participates in worship. From clergy to lay persons, they learn how to participate in worship, what tools are used during worship (Bible, hymnal, offering envelope), etc.), and how to prepare one’s heart and mind for worship.

Who is allowed to work with my child?

Anyone who engages with children in our ministry area must go through a background check as well as our church’s Safe Sanctuary policy.

How do I connect if I have a new addition in my family?

We will be excited to celebrate a new addition to your family!  Please contact Jeanne Poole, Member Assistant, 704-295-2121 who will be happy to take your information to update our records and share your good news with the congregation.

How do I schedule a baptism?

If you are considering baptism for your child, contact Peg Broughton, 704-295-4812. We offer a class on Baptism to learn more as a first step. We hope you will find this class helpful as you make this step for the life of your child.
